Riot shield pointless?

thetizzleguy

Hey hey gamers!.

thought i would make a thread about the riot shield, basically i have been playing with the RS today in a few games and have noticed it does not work..

people can both stab and shoot through me RS :-/

And yes i know this is due to lag comp.. as on my screen im pointing my RS directly infront of the enemy, but on the kill cam i havnt even got the RS out!

lag comp has effected the RS in a dramatic way IMO

what do you think about the RS and have you got any pointers on how to use one?

Thanks.

ive use the riot shield a canny bit , i only used it to get the titles but yeah it is **** people can kill you no matter what , i think the RS should curve around your side (body) a little bit more but no tips tbh its a hard thing to use.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

Yeah I find it pretty useless. Let's be realistic sure there are good secondaries but rs has 80% movement or something, so that kind of kills that...then if you want to overkill it you sacrifice quickdraw pro which is extremely useful for the riot shield...

I guess it's a good thing that it's underpowered rather than overpowered though.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

Who gets killed in a riot with 2 bumps of the riot shield anyway?

the roit shield can great if used the right way. the player using the roit shield should be causing distractions and pulling gun fire towards them so others in your team can pick up easy kills.

going for kills with roit sheild should be a last resort.

    • Re: Riot shield pointless?

its kinda hard to pull gunfire for any amount of time useing a peice of glass to block the bullets

      • Re: Riot shield pointless?

I do understand that it isn't too do and can be made harder by the cracks that appear after being fired upon. But if the guy the shield takes the lead and has someone behind him with a gun supporting them, most times players will shot at the in front(shield guy) giving the guy behind time to line up their shot.

        tips I found that help

1 the left of your body is usually the side that is exposed so try keeping that against a wall

2 you need to have a team beside you at all times

3 smoke cause a great distraction

4 pistols work better that machine pistols due to the swap speed

5 C4 or throwing knife works well with the shield

When using the RS, use cover as much as possible.  If the enemy sees you, often times they'll think you're an easy kill.  If you can duck behind something, and sping out when they're coming to get you, you can get your first bump on them.  The second "death" bump is easier to get as they're still dazed from the first.  Melee is a must, and I prefer a pistol as my secondary as it increases your mobility.

The lag can definitely cause some frustrations, but the shield is a lot of fun.  If you have a teammate, have him hang out behind you and he'll get some easy kills.

I don't think the RS is going to make your K/D go up, but it can be used effectively in objective games.

I've said before, the riot shield has problems beyond lag.  I've used it in four-player split-screen, an offline game mode where lag and lag-compensation shouldn't be factors (though it likely introduces new factors), and I've still sometimes seen bullets pass through the shield.  It still has the knifing issues.  It still has the issue of being slowly killed through sustained fire.

One other interesting thing with offline split-screen is that third-person models can sometimes get out of sync with the first-person view.  I don't know if this is only an offline split-screen multiplayer issue, or if this is happening in online play as well.  If it is happening in online matches, it would obviously be mistaken as a lag-related issue.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

RS is great for hardcore. I definitely got cussed out one match for using it in HC Dom with a trophy system and blast shield. People want their easy tube kills...

But usually I'll use the RS with slieght of hand, quickdraw, and steady aim. I'll have a throwing knife and trophy system along with dual .44 magnums. It works pretty well, but I get kills from the magnums more than the RS.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

It's also nice in things like Team Defender.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

I agree with copester1963 I don't understand how you die from a piece of plastic! Two bumps and your dead!? Hmmm...

I think it should work more like a stun, two bumps from the RS and your dazed, then you switch from your RS to weapon for the kill.

It is called balance my friend. Why have it as a primary weapon then if it doesn't kill?

How do you die from being knifed anywhere on your body, even from the most glancing blow, received at the edge of range or given in almost careless passing?

The game is streamlined and exagerated for fast combat, not realistic combat.

And for balance reasons, the shield has to be seen in competition with the knife.  The knife is a OHK, fast attack,  easy to use, has amazing targeting/strike-area, carrying it does not adversely affect movement speed, and is guaranteed for nearly all of the closest ranged combat.  The current shield is already at a disadvantage, as a slower two-hit kill is a much different beast to manage than a one-hit kill.  And that is without even getting into how the knife's ability to lunge through bullets somewhat negates the shield's defense advantage.

If you want a weaker shield, then you really need to weaken the knife as well.  Otherwise you end up with silly or degenerate situations such as hitting  with the shield to stun and immediately switching to knife for the kill, or even switching to the knife directly without ever doing the shield attack at all.

      • Re: Riot shield pointless?

First point, how do you die from two pushes from a sheet of perspex? Out of all the BS in the game, this is the one death I stuggle to get my head round!

I accept a knife death over a RS death simply because a knife, in my mind, is more lethal than a RS, and I never asked for a weaker shield. The point I was trying to make was I just don't see how it's a primary / lethal weapon unless your using it in an aggressive manor which it isn't. I think it would be better suited in the equipment slot as a non-leathal item. You could stun at CQ and then kill with a primary or what ever, and it would have damage so you can only use it a few time before it breaks, so it's in keeping with the other items in this slot.

It's an arcade shooter "video game." Video game is the key words there. This is not a simulator. They need things called balance.

          • Re: Riot shield pointless?

Dude, seriously. I'm not a retard. I get its a computer game. The reason I know this is becuase I'm in my room, and not a war zone, and I'm holding a controller and not a real gun.

My comment was in response to the guy who said "How do you die from being knifed anywhere on your body, even from the most glancing blow, received at the edge of range or given in almost careless passing?".

Perhaps you should message him about balance.

A RS is a non-leathal piece of kit compared to explosives, guns, and knives regardless if real life or video games IMO.

            Peace.

            • Re: Riot shield pointless?

I didn't say the knife is balanced.  I said that the shield needs some strength to compete with the knife.  After all, when you use a shield, you lose access to the knife.

              There are alternatives.

If you reduce the power or effectiveness of the knife, then you can justify reducing the power of the shield as a melee weapon.

You could, as you said, change the shield from a Primary to a non-lethal Equipment.  With it no longer classed as a weapon, it becomes a support item and it becomes much easier to do away with any direct lethality.

You could replace the shield melee with a regular knife melee.  If someone can easily do a knife swipe while holding a light machine gun or two machine pistols, then why shouldn't they be able to do a knife swipe while holding a shield?  (Why?  If you asked the people who put the Riot Shield in Call of Duty, they'd say  "balance".  Defense with an insta-kill melee was most likely considered too powerful to allow, and thus the two-hit shield kill was born in the first place.)

Its bullet-proof, not plastic. Its also not the correct riot shield, there is one made out of titanium with a slit to see through. And another slit to shoot a handgun out of. They didnt put that one in due to crap vision

He doesn't seem to have a problem with using it

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

I use the Riot shield every now and then mostly while playing SND. My usual class setup would be:

    Primary: Riot Shield

    Secondary: Akimbo Mp9's

    Lethal: C4

    Tactical: Portable Radar or Flash

Perk 1: Sleight of Hand Pro

    Perk 2: Quick Draw Pro

Perk 3: Steady Aim Pro/Dead Silence Pro

Support Streak: UAV and Ballistic Vests (Adds extra support for you and teammates)

It's simple to use as deflecting bullets and once you see the enemy stop shooting ( that mean thier either reloading, pulling out secondary, or throwing a stun/flash/grenade) at this point you should pull out your akimbo's and spray it right on him. The C4 you use it when enemy's are trying hiding around corners or when they go behind something for cover I just throw the C4 and BOOM! It's very fun to use and sometimes get like 3 ballistic vests 3 times in a game!

I get so many people calling me a noob for using this tactic. =P

    half-megatron

You have to use you noggin to use a RS, stall and strafe while closing in on youe enemy and time when they will run out of bullets...I use the riot shield a lot.  and for the people who complain about halo jumpers, you can raise your RS upwards and attack....I do it all the time.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

Lag. Just lag. Not everything has to be a conspiracy.

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?

Too much lag in this game for the RS to be really effective, and its just cannon fodder in HC. All kinds of things work against RS users: nube tubes, rockets, nades, even UAV spam kills it since overkill is almost required. Akimbo FMGs are unreliable especially with all the nerfs they have deservedly gotten. And if your team isnt playing the objective then it really is worthless.

The Riot Shield definitely has its downfalls. I use it fairly consistently, gamertag is my forum name. I put a few videos in my vault, as well as one of it utterly failing due to lag comp, etc.

I especially seem to have trouble with stalker, it seems to break my shield, even allowing people 30ft away firing at the center to have their bullets pierce it.

Another issue is the random 180/360 spin I'll get that completely throws me off balance.

Currently around rank 150 in the Crowd Control Accolade, .62 KD last time I checked. #1 in Crowd Control is like .47.

    well a couple things...

don't be poor. meaning get a better higher speed internet.

    shut off options like recording.

learn how to use the riot shield effectively.

RS is great for some game modes and not for others learn which

I scared of shields. Never lost a game cause of one. But dey are scarey,

  • Re: Riot shield pointless?
    duo962

Okay, have a bit more time here now.

The setup I run with my Riot Shield is

    Riot Shield - Melee

    412's or Magnum

    Throwing Knife

    Concussion Grenades

    Extreme Conditioning

    Hardline

    Sitrep

Specialist - Blast Shield, Assassin, Blind Eye

Know when to back off. Use objects and corners as extra coverage for yourself to help keep the enemy from strafing around your shield.

After your first melee, try to take a step back. This will help prevent knife through shield, headshot through shield, etc at point blank. Somehow when it's that close, the game acts as if your shield doesn't exist.

Try to only move when they are reloading or switching weapons. If they are continuously firing and moving forward, back up rather than moving towards them.

Practice with the throwing knife to get used to the angles. One of the easiest ways to kill someone is when they're not firing and waiting for you to move or switch to your secondary. Line up your shield where you know the throwing knife will hit them and throw. They may get 1-2 shots off before it kills them, but you'll usually win.

If you face overwhelming odds like 3 enemies running at you from one direction, you're pretty much going to die. Your best bet is to throw your throwing knife, which will usually get you at least one kill. Sometimes this has allowed me to actually get in and kill the other two enemies off with my shield melee after.

Try not to flash/stun yourself. Somehow I always seem to be stunned/flashed more even with Blast Shield Pro than the enemy I threw the grenade at. It makes a major disadvantage for turning your shield.

Be careful when picking up your throwing knife. I really wish they would make it optional to change buttons for picking them up, as I often end up picking up the weapon of the enemy who I just killed and their teammate decides to walk around a corner as I'm shieldless and in the weapon drawing animation.

A Semtex stuck to your shield with Blast Shield is not supposed to kill you. That doesn't mean that it won't. You are sometimes able to negate the blast of the Semtex by pushing your shield up against a wall or aiming it at the ground. Blast shield is pretty lackluster in this regard. You'll die pretty easily to most explosives even with it. When it does work, though, it's nice to hit them once, get the Semtex stuck to your shield, and then chase them until it explodes, giving you an assisted suicide kill and keeping you alive.

If you know you're in a connection where either you have 3 bars or your enemy has 3 bars, just try to not use the shield. It ends up not being worth it, because the lag affects it even worse. Not only are you less likely to be able to hit someone (often shield lunging towards their body, being against it, and getting no hit marker), but you are also less able to defend yourself.

Personally, I feel that the shield needs a bit of fixing. There are definitely times when I get killed by center shield shots or crouching still but the edges don't protect properly. I also fail to see why Riot Shield movement is slower than running with a Javelin out. I would love for an option for Scavenger to repair my shield or let me hold a button as long as it takes to get an enemy care package to repair it.

If faced with a Riot Shield, I find that hipfiring has a tendency to work better than aiming. Dual machine pistols tend to not care that a shield is there. Also, waiting for them to hit you once and then sprinting behind them and knifing them is an effective strategy.

the riot shield is awesome if you know how to counter your opponent before they make their move.

i have a 2.70 ratio and constantly use the Shield.

in celebration of becoming #1 on the Wii Riot Boards i released this video:

feel free to use my class set up.
