DEDICATED SERVER QUESTION

I never really understood what a "dedicated server was".

 

can someone please explain? and also if pc users get it why cant we? i dont understand the difference

    Dedicated servers are basically a system that an online game is run on, all the users playing connect into that server which is the host.

     

    In MW3 , P2P technolgy is used. Which basically means, one of the players in the lobby is host and their PS3 is effectively the server

      oh so why cant console users get dedicated servers if PC users get it? and does it mean dedicated servers result in NO lag?

        PC players is in the minority, meaning they could afford dedi's for them.

        You will always get lag in online gaming.

         

        Dedicated servers are a lot more stable and are specifically set up to run a game, so it is superior to P2P. However if you are geographically a long way from the server you will get a lot of lag.

        Dedicated servers are servers that exist only to host games. The first dedicated servers were created because PCs just weren't powerful enough to both run a game and host a game. So even in LAN environments, you would often see a number of people running a game on their PCs and a separate PC in the network used to host the game.

         

        Nowdays with PCs being more powerful, they are capable on most games of both running and hosting games. However, people have gotten used to the consistancy of dedicated servers and are unwilling to go back to P2P systems.

         

        Benefits of Dedicated Servers:

        Dedicated servers exist for one sole purpose - running games. There are no situations where the speeds drop because someone in the living room downloads a movie or someone starts streaming music. There is a consistant upload and download speed. They also prevent someone from getting an unfair advantage when host by changing around gamefiles (the reason why you have "glitched" lobbies).

         

        Contrary to popular belief, dedicated server usage for PC for MW3 is extremely limited. If there is a group that got screwed more than PS3, it is the PC gamers. To have access to dedicated servers, PC players have to purchase CoD Elite and to make matters worse, games on dedicated servers don't count towards official stats.

         

        Most dedicated servers for PC games are privately owned. That's one thing that a lot of console gamers don't understand. Sure, on occasion the developer will have a limited number of dedicated servers, but many are privately rented and are maintained by players. So the types of games available are determined not by what people want to play, but rather what the server admin wants to run. Also, these servers are expensive to maintain and can cost a couple hundred dollars a month to rent and maintain.

         

        That being said, Activision makes billions of dollars a year. I'm sure that they can buy a couple hundred servers and make a dual hosting system with both Ded server and P2P capabilities as well as a server browser for P2P games.

            Haha and they still require PC users to buy CoD Elite to use the dedicated servers? PC users are getting screwed even harder than I imagined.

                With internet connections, you have a download speed and an upload speed. Most of the time, download speeds tend to be much higher than upload speeds. (A typical "high speed" connection will have between 7-10 mbps download and about a 0.7 mbps upload connection)

                 

                So if someone with those specifications runs the game and is host, then 0.7 mbps upload is the maximum bandwidth that the specific host can offer. However, because internet connections are typically shared within a household, the maximum upload speed is not typically obtained.

                 

                0.7 mbps is on the lower end in terms of upload speeds. With a dedicated server, you are going to have a higher upload speed and one that doesn't fluctate as much as home connection.

                 

                With a system where a player is the host, his upload usage will be higher than everyone else's because as host, he's sending out information to all the other players. With dedicated servers, none of the players use more upload bandwidth than others because none of the players are the host.
