Didn't read the entire thread, but enough to give me some opinions on it. If it were monthly operating costs keeping AV from running dedi's, then why couldn't they solve that with a subscription (like WoW)? I mean, if 10 million are on at any given time ,as you estimated, then would $5 a head per month not cover these "operating costs"? Hell, they could charge .99 a month and still rake profits off of paying for dedi's (10 million X .99=, well you get the point)... If $9,900,000 isn't a big enough budget to satisfy all maintenance and upgrading costs then there is no number that will fill the void. And if they are worried about the kiddies not being able to pay for it, just mark the disc up by twelve bucks and hide the cost. (Just say they had to raise the price due to inflation or some crap) There you have it, $72.00 for every disc of MW4, and prepaid subscriptions to dedi's for everyone. Just a thought.

As far as if a dedi goes down and having to deal with unhappy customers that can't play, or when the dedi's are down for service etc. Just keep the coding in for P2P as a back up, and if the dedi's crash or need service everyone would already have the back up (current system) in place to take over until dedi's are back up. Seems too simple to work, but just a thought I had.

I don't think they are quite what you all think they are. They are not the answer and could possibly end up being worse then what we currently have.

I don't think they are the answer to anything other than leveling the playing field and managing lag spikes better. I do no believe they are a "wonder drug" that cures all. I do, however, believe that having 12 people report to an unbiased host, instead of 11 players reporting to the 12 player a bit more fair. For example, if the dedi is bad, it's bad for all. If it plays well, it plays well for all. And the dedi won't download netflix or facebook in the back ground. Just my opinion.

10million is the high end across all games and all consoles on a  great day. It's a worst case scenario for price point sake.

As far as charging a fee, not everyone would go for it, and those numbers are arbitrary as a mentioned. My numbers are based on what available information I could find. They could very well be much higher. With that said, I wouldn't mind playing $5 or even paying for a monthly ELITE fee to garauntee solid gameplay

Not everyone has to go for that, that is the beauty of it. If people won't buy a game over a 12 dollar increase, then they weren't going to get it anyway. I can honestly say that if I was told all future COD title would be 72.00 from this point on because "we are implementing dedicated server service" then I would pay the cost. It seems price vs reward would be worth it, to me anyway. Of course this is theoretical, and may/will never happen, but at least the ideas are out there. Great things don't happen over night, they take time and thoughtful evaluation. I respect your argument and fully see what you mean. I am only offering up a what if scenario to open more eyes to different solutions to different problems. By no means do I wish to take away from what you are saying, as it is all very true.

if you go back and read the thread i have broken down the costs in it somewhere..

Adding dedis to console cod would have the same affect as spraying a bit of vegatable oil on your wing mirrors to make your car go faster.

Ok, but think about it this way.  Instead of the 12th man being host, he lives next door to the Server Farm.  He pings it in under 5ms, while everyone else is a respectable 600+ mi away and their average ping is at around 80ms.

The only thing you do hit solid ground on is that in theory, dedis should provide a better hosting experience, unless of course the maintenance dude is streaming a ton or porn or something.
