The Gfinity G3 tournament kicked off Saturday from the Copper Box Arena in London, England. 12 of the best Call of Duty teams from North America and Europe began the competition for their share of a $55,000 prize pool and the title of Gfinity G3 champions. Saturday's action saw the completion of group play, as eight teams moved on to Sunday's single-elimination tournament, while four teams were eliminated from contention.
Here are the complete group play results from Gfinity G3:
*Epsilon eSports (2-0)
*Team Curse (1-1)
Exertus eSports (0-2)
Epsilon eSports were the only European team to break through on Saturday, winning all six of their maps played to take Group Alpha. Joining them out of the group is Team Curse, who came back from a 0-2 map deficit to beat and eliminate ExertuseSports.
*OpTic Gaming (1-1)
Team Vitality (0-2)
After two respective sweeps against TeamVitality, old rivals EnVyUs and OpTicGaming faced off in a head-to-head matchup to determine the 1st and 2nd seeds for Group Bravo. It was EnVyUs who would continue their perfection, taking the series 3-0 to win the group.
*OpTic Nation (1-1)
TCM Gaming (0-2)
In what many considered the "group of death" in the tournament, it was the UK squad TCM Gaming that would not survive the day. FaZe and OpTic Nation met in the final matchup of the group, with FaZe winning 3-1 to take the series and the group's top seed.
*Team Kaliber (2-0)
*Evil Geniuses (1-1)
Team Infused (0-2)
Team Kaliber continues to find success with their reformed original roster, as they ended Saturday as the top seed from Group Delta. The feat is even more impressive given that they shared a group with two-time Gfinity winners Evil Geniuses, who they defeated in a 3-1 series. It was tough luck meanwhile for Team Infused, who just couldn't put it together against two powerhouse teams.
With group play wrapped up, random draws were held to determine the quarter-final and semi-final matchups:
Quarter-final #1: Epsilon eSports vs. OpTic Gaming
Quarter-final #2: EnVyUs vs. Team Curse
Quarter-final #3: Team Kaliber vs. OpTic Nation
Quarter-final #4: FaZe vs. Evil Geniuses
Semi-finals #1: Winner of Q1 vs. Winner of Q4
Semi-finals #2: Winner of Q2 vs. Winner of Q3
Eight teams have survived group play and made it to Sunday's single-elimination tournament. There is little room for error now, as one bad series will have a team immediately out of contention. Which four teams will make it out of the quarter-finals and into the money? Which team will top all others to claim the $30,000 top prize and the title of Gfinity G3 champions?
