It was a jam-packed day of action on Saturday, as the top competitive teams continued play in the first Call of Duty®: Ghosts tournament at MLG Columbus. By the end of the night, only eight teams remained in the tournament and in the hunt for the MLG Championship!
Championship Winners Bracket
compLexity had a lot to live up to as the top ranked team in the tournament, and they backed it up with a solid performance on Day 2. They opened up Round 1 by making quick work of Skyline, winning 3-0 with a 35-5 blowout in Blitz/Fright. UK team TCM-Gaming was waiting in Round 2, an opponent that would take each game to the wire. In a series that included a one point Domination win, an 11th round Search & Destroy, and an overtime in Blitz, compLexity would come out on top in each one to take a hard fought 3-0 sweep.
compLexity’s closest competition came in Round 3, where they faced off against EnVy. EnVy handed the team their first losses of the tournament, taking the Domination and Blitz games on Octane. But compLexity would prove just as dominant on the map Sovereign, equaling EnVy with wins in S&D and Domination. That led a deciding S&D/Warhawk game, which would go to a heart stopping 11th round. In the end, compLexity would pull it out to punch their ticket in the Top Bracket Final.
Team Kaliber would be the other team to survive in the Winners Bracket. After a victory over Epsilon on Friday, tK kicked off Saturday with a Round 2 matchup against Curse Las Vegas. Many had 3rd seeded Curse Las Vegas as favorites to win the entire tournament, but tK would make their mark with a surprising 3-0 sweep.
Round 3 brought a matchup with upstart Kelevra Fuse. After losing all of their Domination games on Friday, tK would flip the script Saturday by taking both Dominations from Fuse on their way to a 3-1 victory. For a team known for their great S&D play, another strong Domination performance on Sunday could produce Team Kaliber a championship.
Championship Losers Bracket
Six teams from the Losers Bracket toughed it out to move on to Championship Sunday. JusTus Pro and Strictly Business both have valid claims as the "giant killers" of Saturday. Between the two teams, they have eliminated OpTic Gaming, TCM-Gaming, Primal, SoaR, and both Curse teams.
Vanquish are strong contenders to look out for, as the UMG Dallas champions hope to add an MLG championship to their resume. 2nd seed 8-12 UNiTE Gaming will also be out to back up their high placement. EnVy and KelevraFuse are still alive as well; both eager to earn rematches against the teams that knocked them out of the Winners Bracket.
Each of the remaining teams have guaranteed a share of the $50,000 prize pool, but who will come out on top to take the $20,000 1st prize? Watch Championship Sunday action live at MLG.tv and stay tuned to this blog for continued coverage of MLG Columbus 2013!
