Call of Duty: Black Ops II Weapon Information | Assault Rifles

This is the second part of my Weapon Information discussions, the first was SMG's now we're on Assault Rifles so hope you enjoy, feel free to comment or correct me on anything I may have got wrong, next I'll be doing LMGs.

MTAR (Real; Actually called the MTAR-21)

The MTAR called the MTAR-21 in real life is an Israeli bullpup Carbine. It is named after Mount Tabor while "MTAR-21" stands for Micro Tavor Assault Rifle - 21st Century, it is manafactured in Israel by Israel Military Industries (IMI) and has been recently selected as the future Assault Rifle of the Israeli Defense Forces, and some infantry divisions are being issued with the rifle, replacing the bigger and standard TAR-21. It is chambered in the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and is also designated X95 and sometimes called the Tavor-2 designed especially for special forces units looking for a compact Assault Rifle.

      Type 25 (Not real)

The Type-25 is another bullpup Assault Rifle in BO2, however this rifle is non-existent in real life it would be of Chinese origin as is easily told by the very Chinese design including the similar grip and trigger, trigger guard as the Type 95 from MW3 and of course the name with "Type" in it. In real life it would be called the QBZ-25 as the "Type" designation in Chinese isn't used as it's official name. The magazine is the same as the QBZ-95 (Type 95) therfore it would fire the 5.8x42mm cartridge, it's likely in the world of BO2 that the Type 25 replaced the Type 95 in 2025 and performs the same role.

SWAT-556 (Real; Actually called the SG 556, in-game version actually the SG 551)

The SWAT-556 originally called the "SG 556" which it is called in real life, it is a commercial version of the SG 551 Assault Rifle. The SG 556 lacks full-auto capability however adding the Selector Switch attachment in BO2 allows fully automatic fire effectivly turning it into an SG 551. The SG 556 is manafactured by Swiss Arms AG (formerly Schweizerische Industrie Geselleschaft) of Neuhausen, Switzerland (SG is an abbreviation for Sturmgewehr, or "Assault Rifle"). The rifle fires the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge.

FAL OSW (Real; In-game version actually the SA-58)

The FAL OSW in BO2 originally called the "SA-58" (a different real gun that the actual BO2 version is based off) is a Belgium paratrooper version of the FAL. The Fusil Automatique Leger ("Light Automatic Rifle") or FAL is a self-loading, selective fire Battle Rifle manafactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN). The FAL OSW is chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartdrige and it is widespread among the armed forces of many NATO countries.

M27 (Real; Actually designated the M27 IAR or HK416 if not an IAR)

The M27 which is designated the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) in real life, is a US lightweight Assault Rifle firing the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. It is currently used by the U.S. Marine Corps however the United States Army do not plan to purchase the IAR. It's design is based on the HK416 and is starting to replace the M249s originally in service with the USMC, it is manafactured in Germany by the German company Heckler & Koch (H&K). The in-game version closer resembles the HK416 rather than the M27 IAR however the BO2 version might actually be the HK416 as if the HK416 won the Individual Carbine competition and replaced the M4A1 in service with the US Army it would likely be designated the M27.

      SCAR-H (Real)

The SCAR-H which is the abbreviation for Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle - Heavy (SCAR-H) is a Belgium modular assault rifle built by FN Herstal (FNH) in real life and also won the SCAR competition to become the new special forces Assault Rifle. It is chambered in the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge and is issued to many US special forces especially the 75th Ranger Regiment and the Navy SEALs. The SCAR is currently in the Individual Carbine competition to replace the M4A1 as is the HK416 however it's likely the 'L' varient from MW3 is the one competing, the version in-game is the black 'H' varient. The in-game model actually has "SCAR 17S" on the left side on the gun which is the semi-auto only civilian version of the SCAR-H not the military version, possibly a mistake/easer egg by Treyarch.

      SMR (Not real)

The SMR like the Type 25 doesn't exist in the real world however it looks to have replaced the M14 EBR as the Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) in service with US Forces and likewise is most likely of US origin. Unlike it's predecessors the SMR is bullpup, it appears (by the size of it's mag and visable caliber inside it) to fire the same 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge as the M14 EBR, it also has "SMI" with a lightning bolt logo on the right side of the gun visable while reloading there is also "SMI" viable on the rear iron sight while aiming which is possibly the manafacturer in 2025, also like the M14 EBR it has a fully-automatic fire mode, usable by attaching the Select Fire attachment.

M8A1 (Real; Called the XM8 in real life)

The M8A1 is actually a non-existent possibly US/German built weapon by Heckler & Koch with various US companies as it's real-life predecessor the XM8 project was formally cancelled on October 31st 2005. The game uses the M8A1 as had it been not cancelled and gone on to see production, if it had been produced it would indeed use the designation "M8A1" as the 'X' means eXperimental and all US weapons use the 'M' designation and the 'A1/2/3 etc.' to designate the version. It appears to fire the same 5.56x45mm NATO round as the XM8 did from a similar magazine. It uniqely includes a 4-round burst mode by default and a fully-automatic mode whereas the XM8 only featured semi-automatic and fully-automatic. Aesthetic differances to the XM8 are: It has an RIS picatinny rail system on the handguard and top, different iron sights and a slightly different stock and grip.

      AN-94 (Real)

The AN-94 is a real-life weapon it is an advanced Russian made Assault Rifle firing the unique 5.45x39mm cartridge, the intitals stand for Avtomat Nikonova of 1994 after it's chief designer. It is to become general issue for the Russian Federation and Associated States (RFAS) armed forces, the BO2 version has a tan design and a mounted RIS picatinny scope rail aswell as a foregrip mounted rail system it also uniquely fires the first 2 rounds at a faster rate of fire (ROF) than the rest fired. It also has the unique 2-round burst mode that the real-life version does, it has the serial number: "30948453".

Next I'll cover the BO2 Light Machine Guns (LMGs).
