      G'day gang,

I'm happy to say that when it comes to playing cod I'm an average player behind the controller. I could give excuses such as having dodgy eyes and having Zelda born reflexes, but excuses don't help. Instead I'm calling out, not just for me, but my fellow average gamers, how do I get better?

A few of my bad habits are : reloading when I don't need to, crosshairs facing down(ish) while running, and somehow managing to move closer to the grenade when the symbol comes up, lols. I do try to work on such things, but in the heat of battle fail.

Tactic wise I consider myself to be pretty good . I can change my gamestyle up depending on objective, what the opponents are doing, etc. I play mostly as a lone wolf, so learning how to adapt to my environment is, by necessity, my strong suit. However, any tactics that you find useful given particular situations, please share.

I know that there are some excellent gamers within this forum. So please provide your tips, tactics, loadouts, and wisdom. No need to direct information at me, direct them to all the average gamers out there.

Learn all the little flanks that are hidden. Most players are conditioned to sprint to the middle of the map. Learning the flanks that most still don't know about are great ways to get easy kills.

Accuracy wins out over RoF. Most of the more powerful ARs are single burst kills with the burst fire attachment, the Maverick being the most powerful.

Map Knowledge - Simply knowing the map, where people usually run, lines of sight, etc. will give you an advantage over your competition. This isn't something you can teach, or learn instantly, it's just about playing the map a lot and traversing through it in its entirety. I typically stay out of the middle of the map, there are many outside routes that I'd prefer to take over sprinting through the middle.

Gun Knowledge - Know each weapon's strengths and weaknesses and play to the strengths of that weapon. For instance, don't use a shotgun on Stonehaven. Might get you a kill or two inside the castle, but for the most part you'd be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

Gun Battle Tactics - Strafing, dropshotting, jumpshotting, etc. This is common sense but, don't stand still while firing! If you know that your enemy sees you and is firing at you, evade that ****! I play on tactical, so it's easy for me to hit the deck when in a sticky situation.

Practice, Practice, Practice - If you think you can get good at Call of Duty within a few games, you're dead wrong and I want what you are smoking. Accuracy, skill, and knowledge can only be increased by playing a lot and developing over time. Trust me, I've been playing for 8 years and I'm still not the best.

Use cover! This is perhaps the sole reason I have success, because I have learned to push forward without being seen, surprise attack (kill one or two) and pull back and try again. It takes decent reaction / aiming speed.

Try not to be the test dummy.  By that I mean if a guy is bumping you then let him go first instead of running outside of your desired route to get away from him.  More often than not Mr. Impatient will get himself killed and leave you an easy target to clean up but if you go outside of your comfort zone, you'll get dropped and so will he.  So when I see a friendly that is overly eager to go first, I let them.  This doesn't mean that you should be afraid to lead the way but do it on your own terms.  Along these lines, always always always keep some distance between you and your teammate when following.  If he gets killed you want to be just far enough behind to not be seen but still know what happened.  This way the enemy will think he is safe and you often will catch them weak and reloading.  And from the other side of it, if there's one enemy then expect there to be two.  If there's two expect three.  Don't reload until you are sure that you are safe (ie behind cover).  Know the size of your clip and how many enemies that you can drop with it before needing to reload.  And as G said, flank.  Shooting people in the back is much better than shooting them head on.  If you do find yourself in a head on situation, strafe side to side.  You'd be surprised how many people can't track a moving target.  Depending on what gun your opponent is using you may want to strafe backwards side to side.  Ie if you are facing a shotgun or SMG, you want to get outside of his max damage range unless you are also using one of those.  Often times that little bit of damage reduction will buy you just enough advantage to win the fight.

This is an excellent train of tips. I know what you mean phsx, I often berate myself for following a team mate too closely. Strafing is something I am getting better at implementing. However, if I put stalker on I often feel uncoordinated - I should really practice such things in squad mode

I hardly ever use Stalker because it tends to throw me off as well.  Granted the method does get a boost from using it but I find that I don't really need it most of the time.

I hated getting Stalker in MW3 with the Specialist. I'll be on a tear and once the Specialist bonus hits I can't aim anymore. I had to start using Stalker on my Specialist classes as a main perk just adapt.

I too am your A-Typical average gamer so I'm always looking for ways to improve.  I use a Remington so reloading time is like watching "Gone with the Wind" (I don't use the fast reload perk so I only have myself to blame) so I second the "find some cover to reload" advise.  I will generally try and reload after each kill so I will crouch down behind whatever I can.  Sometimes I will go prone for a second or two.  You'd be surprised how many people with run right past you while you are laying down.  Then you jump up and shoot them in the back and they call you a Camper!!

You can also learn a great deal if you happen to be fortunate to get into a match with 4-5 "helpful" clan guys that are really team oriented and will include you in their game. Listen to their call-outs and watch how they react to them.   And like it's been said earlier (and for the reasons given), NEVER follow your grenade to the target!  Throw that sucker and go the other way!

I'm with ya...I love having Stalker.  Makes going around corners much easier when you don't feel like you are moving in slow motion!

                                For me the best advice was;

                                Tip 1

Rarely sprint, unless you need to,  go at a speed that you can still hipfire without adjustment and don't instinctively pop your sights when you see a target just let them have it from the hip in short controlled bursts, pop the sights when safe to do so . I died one on one time after time because I tried to pop my sights. This technique is best in hardcore.

                                Tip 2

                                Only play hardcore

Map knowledge is most important thing. That includes many things: Know the routes enemies will usually take and how to flank them, know where to most safely access a location, where enemies spawn (keep monitoring where your teammates are and where are they moving!), what are good wallbang spots and for example know the frag spots. Frags are the lethal equipment of my choice I can easily smoke out campers and I have come to know ton of great frag spots on all of the maps.

Secondary weapon! Know when to switch, its a life saver and this needs to come automatically and you might need a lot of practice for it. Find the primary weapon that suits you the best for me in Ghosts its MK 14 EBR with silencer and burst attachment.

Sound, you really want to have dead silence in your attack/rush class and use headset. When you think enemies are close by crouch walk as that is your dead silence in the classes you are not running it.

Outsmart your opponent! These situations are spontaneous and situational and you need to know your surroundings to quickly evade the enemy and then strike back from unexpected location. Fast turning, using corners, windows and elevation to your favor.

Stay away from the middle of maps(most maps).  Work the outside perimeter and hold down an area for awhile, then move on.

                                    Always use FOCUS.

Lose the Crutches and have faith in your own skills. Too many people using Thermals or Trackers that have grown dependent on them to find enemy players. Play with your iron sights, you will be amazed at how much your target acquisition improves.

Keep the IEDs in your kit. People put them down expecting the easy kill and lose the ability to recognize when someone may be flanking them or attacking from behind. They reveal your position as well as your teammates, and are unreliable, especially wen compared  to your own senses and logic.

Find your own play style. Trying to play like someone else is a sure way to have a bad experience in this game.

Just have fun. Don't get caught up in stats. You will find your game improves when you just let yourself go and enjoy it.

When the timing of the game doesn't match you , have yourself a drink of your preference ( black label crown for me ) until your timing matches the games. Enjoy

Hey, talk about game matching timing, I fell into a party of folks the other night and there were 3 guys and a girl that all knew each other and they were playing a drinking game.  Everytime one of them got a headshot he (or she) would yell "Headshot" and the rest of them would yell "Drink" and they would each throw back shot.  They had obviously been playing a few games already and I played about 5 matches with them.  By then they were toast.  Odd thing was they actually seem to get better the more headshots they got.  I spent a good 90 minutes laughing my A$$ off at these guys.  So their must be something in the "Liquid Timing" Perk!!

I got dropped into a lobby with a friend once who I didn't have as a friend on the PSN. When I went to join my friend who lived down the street he had also invited the friend I just played with (mind you I didn't know it was him). I saw his name and was like, "hey, I just played with him". And my friend was like, "Well you should, that's Chris". Small world.

Match making tries it's best to keep the games as local as possible. So you can get lucky and play in a lobby full of people who you've might actually met before. AND YOU'D NEVER KNOW!

                                                  Lots of good advice here.

If its been said, sorry but I didnt see it.

When you are having a bad game: Slow down. Consider changing tactics. A break and a refreshement when things are going badly is an awesome suggestion!

Do not let yourself be influenced into a playstyle that doesn't suit you by online comments. Many death comments are BS anyhow.

Remember the guy who killed you can hear you when you die, so if you are going to callout his position to your team, wait a few seconds, that way he is not forewarned people will be coming/expecting him.

Do not feed campers easy kills. Once you know where one is flank him, blow him up or avoid him.

Being polite is always a plus in my book.

                                                    sennalike

I put myself in the same category, average at best. I have the occasional 'monterous' matches, two KEM strikes to date. But those matches only come when I face terrible enemies that seem to enjoy running into my sights repeatedly. So my first 'tip' is keep your fingers crossed, play a lot, and hope you get the terrible team against you.

My second tip is stick to one or two modes only. I only play HC Dom and it really helps when you know what the enemy are likely to do, it cuts down on a lot of 'thinking' time.

My final tip would be to ignore what anybody says about playstyles. Do what works for you and not what others want you to do.

                                                    • Re: Share your gameplay tips and tricks

I play mostly dom so 1 thing I do know is if you are on a team that doesn't seem to want to win, leave that lobby and try to find a better one. I cant tell you how many times we would barely lose and you see the number 1 and 2 players on your team have a great k/d but not a single capture. those games suck and gets frustrating, and when I'm frustrated I play poorly. its best to back out and find another team instead of trying to win it on your own.

best thing to do is play with buddies or people you know are trying to win
